Heh.  In my pre-Audi daze, about 1982, I had a '75 Scirocco into
which I had inserted a '77 1.5 VW diesel engine, and a '79 5 speed.
To improve things a bit, I fitted an IHI turbo kit from Shelby.
This worked well with a 2" straight pipe - the turbo sorta quieting
it into a dull roar with the neatest turbo whistle when you shifted.

Biggest problem was that the diesel vibration tended to shake and
crack the exhaust system apart.

This was noticably faster than most VW Rabbit gas cars, and I learned
a lot about injection pumps, diesel timing, boost levels, and effects
on exhaust gas temperatures.
