The talk about sleepers, early Sciroccos with 16V engines, brings back
memories. I fell into European cars in 1964 with a '57 Volkswagen. Just
a few months after it showed up, I found a '57 Porsche engine in a junk
yard ... and found that it could be inserted into the VW with remarkedly
little pain. The first trip down the block impressed me with how little
brakes the VW really had! This developed into 15+ second 1/4 miles,
which brought open mouths from people watching a 'stock' VW bug. This
was in the days before EMPI started making go-fast parts for VW engines.
Several Porsches later, the tow car for a '69 Porsche SCCA C production
was a '68 VW microbus powered by a '72 Porsche 2.4L 911T. The biggest
problem with that one was that my ex-wife kept burning out clutches. %#$&
