[s-cars] 1.8T coilpack coversion

Dear Mr. Ez Veedub: Why, yes, I do know that the push-in 4 pin 1.8t coil
packs have a built-in POS. I think figured that out when I was
developing the first 1.8t coil pack conversion in the summer of 2005
and writing up the DIY instructions and wiring diagram that may (or may
not) have been used in the commercial offering of this conversion by
034Motorsports and Apikol in the spring of 2006.

These DIY instructions, by the way, are the most popular download at
S-cars.org. At last count, had been down-loaded 3283 times (I guess I
should have gone for royalites) ;>)

If you have to run an external POS with the Hitachi bolt-in coil packs,
I don't see much of an advantage over the four pin 115R Bremis.

The factory's solution to the OE external POS heat issue was to mount
the POSs on the air box so there was always cool air going by them
(and/or their heat sinks). They did this in the early 1.8t A4s and I
don't know what else.

If you really want to eliminate heat issues, then 034Motorsports
firewall-mounted five heavy duty coil system is probably the solution.
However, since I have never seen a set of these in person, I do not know
whether the POSs are internal or external.

The POS, by the way, AFAIK, is just a transitorized switch that the
computer controls to send the primary side of the coil to ground in
order to excite the secondary side of the coil and fire the sparkplug.
As a result, the harder it is used, i.e. the higher the sustained RPM on
the engine, the more current that is going through the "switches" in the
POS, and the more heat that results. Marc Swanson and a few others have
had problems with the 1.8t 115 L coil packs under track conditions.
Most people under normal Stage 2 and RS2 street conditions have very few
problems with the conversion. The latest version of the coil packs, the
115 R, seems to be better at not having heat issues. Time will tell how
much better they are.

I never said the 1.8t coil pack conversion was the end all, be all.
Just a reasonably inexpensive alternative to the OE coil and POS
system.

Just to let you know, the 4 pin push in coil packs have the POS
internal.
This is what is burning out in the coils. Either way, internal or
external,
the POS always seems to burn out. IMO, I would prefer to use the 3 pin

Hitachi, and relocate the original UrS4/S6 POS to the plenum area. This

would keep the heat off the POS and prevent them from burning out. The

firewall mount is just not going to cut it, especially with the turbo
and
exhaust blasting it with heat.
