Another failure mode is broken "pressure fingers" in the clutch, BTDT.
Hydraulic failure (leaking hose or cylinder) makes a loose clutch pedal with
speed dependent clutching. Broken "pressure fingers" make a loose clutch
pedal with the clutch somewhat disengaging but always at the same pedal
level whatever the speed of your foot. In any case, higher gear are always
easier to engage as there is less torque involved so the synchros can act
like a clutch... but usually don't like it all.
The best way to find which failure mode you have is to select 1st gear with
the engine stop, depress the clutch, wait a few seconds and start the car.
If it feels the same as starting the car with the clutch engaged, it's
probably hydraulics, if the car moves slowly like slipping clutch and the
clutch engage but very low on the pedal travel, it's probably the "pressure
fingers".
Then, as suggested, look under the clutch pedal for leaks (master cylinder)
and at the rear of the tranny for the slave cylinder. The slave cylinder is
visible from the top from the driver side, at the rear end of the tranny.
Note also that both master and slave cylinder can have internal seal failure
which doesn't show any external leak. In that case, the best way to diagnose
is to have someone looking at the clutch lever while you depress very slowly
the clutch pedal. The lever should move as soon as you start depressing the
pedal. If there's a delay and no leaks it's probably a failure of one of the
hydraulic cylinder. If you want to diagnose it alone, check if the clutch
disengages at the same pedal level when you depress the pedal very slowly
compared to very fast.
HTH,
Vincent.

Hello Everyone,
I am hoping that someone can give me insight onto the problem I am having
with my car. I have a 1995 S6 sedan with 136,000 miles and I was just
driving normally, came to a stop and then when trying to put the car in gear
it felt like the clutch became really loose and then as if the shifter just
dropped and was stuck and I could not get it in 1st gear. I was able to
force it into 2nd or 3rd gear and get the car home but I am assuming that my
transmission is shot as it must not be the clutch or I would not be able to
drive with the car? Being that is the issue I am assuming that replacing the
transmission is expensive and was also looking for recommendations on where
to find 6 speed transmissions and from what model (RS2, euro urs6 model, A6,
etc.) as I am guessing it will cost me about the same or is there a better
option for me. Thanks.
Martin
