nope.

the car will run just fine at full power (26 psi in my case) without
it. you just cannot start it via the usual methods. prove it to
yourself by unplugging the CPS at the firewall, spray a good snort of
ether up the intake snout and then start the engine with the key in
the otherwise normal manner.

the car will run funny for a few seconds as it burns up the ether and
the fuel injection takes over. after that it runs as normal.
