Just FYI...  Here's a Miata being built for the Targa Newfoundland by a
friend of mine who works for Flyin' Miata.  This guy got me into building my
turbo Miata based Locost.

I agree with the Miata as a great choice for a cheap racecar.  I can't think
of anything else that comes very close in terms of reliability, either...

Spec Miata comes to mind-

very reliable
very inexpensive
a used race car will have a full cage, might need to bolt in a passenger
seat.
just need to add a navigator's seat, intercom system and rally computer

A NASA Spec GTI (or whatever that class is called) would also be a good,
inexpensive choice.

Either of these cars are cheap enough that if you wrecked badly, it wouldn't
break the bank to walk away.

Justusson's idea of a 5ktq in full race trim (caged and gutted) with a
chipped MC would be fine, although a bit
large, depending on how tight the roads are.
