[s-cars] How much rust should one expect on a stainless steel exhaust

Good evenin'

I am quite sure Stromung does NOT use 409 stainless because Scot Taylor specified a material type with a leading "3 xx.
But to be sure I will call him tomorrow to be accurate.
Hap, please check your facts before spreading such a comment.

Just FYI... Here's a Miata being built for the Targa Newfoundland by a
friend of mine who works for Flyin' Miata. This guy got me into building my
turbo Miata based Locost.

I agree with the Miata as a great choice for a cheap racecar. I can't think
of anything else that comes very close in terms of reliability, either...

Spec Miata comes to mind-

very reliable
very inexpensive
a used race car will have a full cage, might need to bolt in a passenger
seat.
just need to add a navigator's seat, intercom system and rally computer

A NASA Spec GTI (or whatever that class is called) would also be a good,
inexpensive choice.

Either of these cars are cheap enough that if you wrecked badly, it wouldn't
break the bank to walk away.

Justusson's idea of a 5ktq in full race trim (caged and gutted) with a
chipped MC would be fine, although a bit
large, depending on how tight the roads are.

What are you talking about? Assuming you are using a clutch meant for a
UrS, you throw that EDU spacer away and bolt the EDU up. I have an EDU
6-speed in my 92 S4.

Does anyone happen to know who would sell or could make a spacer that
would
fit an EDU 6 speed tranny onto my urs6. I appears that if I could find a
spacer that would fit, it would bolt on with longer bolts without having
to
shave the inside on the transmission. If anyone knows of someone, I
would
appreciate it. Thanks.

One other choice that I just came up with- mid '90s GC8 Subaru Impreza. They
can be had for pretty cheap as long as it's not a 2.5RS, and you can have a
pretty decent handling Impreza with a lot of bolt-on suspension parts. The
2.2s aren't complete dogs, 2.5s are decent (other than the head gasket
issue), avoid the early 1.8s. Short wheelbase, AWD, very tossable and pretty
tail-happy cars.

Pretty much all of the JDM STi stuff bolts on. You could go as far as
putting in a USDM 2.5L STi EJ257 and have a monster of a little car running
a stock 300/300 hp/tq. and a nice 6-speed.

Pretty cheap to buy the base chassis, costs a lot to prep, though.

Martin-
I just helped my friend change a clutch in his B5 S4
(2001.5) because of a broken pressure plate spring.
We used the RS4 pressure plate/clutch like you are
planning. There was a spacer that bolted between the
transmission and the engine --it was approximately
1/2" thick and spaced the transmission back a bit. It
definitely was a separate piece from the transmission,
but not really that obvious when things are bolted
together as it matches the shape of the transmission.
Perhaps your used EDU transmission did not come with
this and it would solve your problem? I don't have
access to ETKA right now--but I'm sure you could find
the PN in there.

Just out of curiousity how much rust should accumulate on the
stainless steel exhaust systems. I understand that all metals rust at
somepoint but what is the general accepted level of surface rust over
say 1 light winter or there after?

Depends on the stainless.? 304 will typically only turn tan-ish.? 316 typically "blues" a little, but that's about it.? Lower grades (309) will rust more rapidly, but it will still take extremely long to actually decay to any significant extent.? I believe the stock downpipes are 309.

Dave and Brian

If we're talkin Stromung, that system is made of 409 which has the least
anti-corrosive properties. Try and put a magnet up to a Stromung, it will pull. I
just saw the new Saridea exhaust on Tom Franklin's car that is full 304 and
feature 3 v-band clamps with a 300 cell metallic catalytic converter. He's also
got the new KW coil-overs and they are very sexy. Another aspect to this car
is the fully built engine with lots of shiney parts oooooooooo. I'll try and
get some pics tomorrow.

It happened all of a sudden with no warning. Stopped at a light an then
couldn't get the car into 1st or second. Had to drive from 3rd gear to
limp home. Reverse, 3rd, 4th and 5th work fine. I can't even move the
shifter in the positions that 1st and 2nd occupy. It's like something
is blocking it. Anyone run into this before?

Thanks,

JR

409?! My hopes are all dashed. Okay, so who makes a 3" mandrel-bent
turbo-back with a decent cat and acceptable noise level out of 304 or
better? I checked Saridea's site and didn't see any mention of
theirs...not that that means they don't make one. I think Jason Petek
makes a 3.5" too...don't know the details but maybe it's time to look a
little harder at that.

Man...409...so disappointed.

-Cheers!
