[s-cars] Cat-back mufflers

When I went 3" catback on my '87 5kTQA I deleted both resonators and went with a Magnaflow muffler. Got .1 bar extra out of it, a better exhaust note, and it isn't even close to being loud. Oh, and I opted for a CatCo 'high-flow' kitty too, though I don't think it helped as much as taking the resonators out.
On another note...the rear muffler fell off the '88 5kTQA the other day. I couldn't even tell by the exhaust note that it was no longer connected. Now the metal scraping on the ground sound I could hear, and that is why I pulled over and looked.
Cliff Note Version - Delete the resonators and go with just one muffler. It's cheaper, sounds better, and you'll relieve some back pressure to boot.
If your exhaust train is in decent shape, drop the whole thing and cut out the resonators. Take the parts to a muffler shop, have 'em weld in tubes where the res's were, and put on a new muffler. Take it home and hang it yourself, piece o' cake. Then rinse, and repeat.
Cheers,
-Adam

Subject: Cat-back mufflers
My '91 200 Avants (both #1 and #2) need center and rear mufflers.
Looking to minimize the hit to the wallet, I have a few questions:
* Can I replace just the rear (or center) muffler, and put a pipe in place
of the center (rear) muffler? Will it reduce noise enough to be "normal"?
* I'm thinking this isn't something I want to tackle myself. Can anyone
recommend a muffler shop in the Concord/Manchester NH area? One that
will replace 2 mufflers with one?
Thanks.
