could be the brushes. they're part of the voltage regulator assembly. my alternator died at about 120k miles. i took out the voltage regulator, saw that the brushes were worn out, and replaced with a new voltage regulator from NAPA. cost was about $35. i didn't even have to take the alternator out to change the voltage regulator.

Subject: [s-cars] Alternator Woes
Well, just when you think the old girl is ready for winter...
Patient: 93 Cyclamen Be-atch S4 183k - Bone Stock
Last night out running errands, brake warning and ABS warning lights
illuminate faintly after acceleration. Hmmmm. Several minutes later,
Battery light starts blinking on Autocheck. Hmmmm. Airbag light
illuminates. Hmmmm. Thinking alternator going south.
Get home, shut down, try to restart. Ruh-Ruh-Ruh, starts very slow.
Hmmm. Let sit for the night, charge jumper pack as precautionary
measure. This morning, attempt to drive to the shop. Starts ok,
warning lights on. Make it most of the way way, then radio shuts
down. Only a matter of time now... Quits 2 blocks from shop. Throw
on hazards, hook up jumper pack, dodge traffic. Starts up ok, drive 2
blocks with pack supplying juice.
Sweet...
