George-
When did you buy the S4 in question?
Have you changed tire sizes and/or brands/model during your ownership?
Have you changed anything else?
My fuel economy has changed noticeably when they started selling "E10" here
in PA. I attribute this to the lower energy content of ethanol vs. pure
gasoline.
I've seen fuel economy also affected by the condition of your O2 sensor,
cats and exhaust system- clogged cats, dead O2 sensor, clogged muffler can
all affect performance and fuel economy.
Finally, I noticed about a 2mpg reduction in fuel economy when I went from
225/45R17 tires on my old 200 to 255/40R17. But I also switched brands and
models of tires, so I cannot say for certain that this is only due to the
wider tire.
I have noticed a drop to low 20s mpg in the Miata since I went to
Bridgestone RE-01Rs, I cannot see how I'd drop 4-5mpg from a tire model
change alone (I was running Falken RT-615 before), so I'm suspecting a shot
O2 sensor or a clogged cat/exhaust system as contributing to the loss of
mileage.
