Every t-stat job I've ever done required the o-ring on top, then the gooseneck on top of that forming a nice tight seal. The hack that did it the last time most likely did it wrong, as I can't say I've ever done one on the AAN. My experience is with the 7A in my cq, the AEB in our old A4 and my old 924 P-car.
