Could just be the clutch intermittently slipping. IIRC, the clutch is  
available separately from the compressor.

Just because you know it's hot does not necessarily mean the car  
knows it's hot, i.e. if you/ve got a bad outside temp sensor, the car  
could mistakenly think it's too cold to warrant A/C. However, your  
ProDiag code is prolly closer to the root cause.
