I fixed a seemingly simmilar random clunk in an urS4 by simply loosening all 
of the subframe bolts then re-tighening them. Not one at a time, loosened 
all before retightening any. I made sure to mark the position of the 
subframe at every corner just in case it got nudged or whatnot. Seems just 
as you describe... completely random, not readily reproducable, but always 
while reversing or turning.
