are you faster on your unobtainium bicycle than you were on your entry-level steel bike ten or twenty years ago?

As I've gone through my 40s, I've made do with a series of
increasingly expensive carbon and then titanium bicycles.
What's the wife-approved mistress for a man reaching his 50s? I've
got 3 years to plan/invest/save/budget/stash away....
