  Looks like in 2000 the p.o. replaced the battery with an Interstate. No vent hole.

The battery is supposed to be vented to the outside of the car.  The hose you describe is that vent hose.  someone replaced the battery back when with the incorrect battery.  The correct battery has a small hose connection for this hose.  It is a type 41 battery with vent.

  p.s. I tried searching the archives and couldn't get much.
         then I tried the AW site and got alota bs and swearwords regarding a toilet and no toiletpaper...
