My 93 nearly failed smog. The tech had to do a 2nd test which involved
running the engine at 2500(?) for 5 minutes. He said this process helps
clean the catalytic converters and that burning oil is what degrades them.
So, in my case, I think the failing turbo which is releasing about 1 quart
per 4000 miles, is fouling the cat. Also, 2 years ago, taking 2 tries to
again pass smog, same turbo, same oil consumption, I had the injectors
cleaned and replaced O2 sensor before the retry. Supposedly, cleaning the
injectors is supposed to restore balance to the fuel injection process.
Good luck. I'll post back in another year with the rebuilt turbo results.
