[s-cars] S8 For Sale ... just passing along .../Allroadsuspension reliablity comments

Hi Calvin,
The 2001-2004 Allroads with 2.7t and 5-speed tips came with a torque
converter that had a poor seal design resulting in high pressure oil in
areas not intended - the initial 17125 code from Vag Com is the signal
of impending doom; "Torque converter clutch stuck off" is what the code
represents. Bruce's message about warranty for the car wasn't available
to me when we first bought the car, and from what I read, a lot of these
tranny's were replaced under warranty prior to the first 50K. We had
never replaced the tranny oil and filter in this beast (perhaps it had
something to do with eventual failure of the oil pump?) and Audi's
recommendation is that's a lifetime thing - I won't believe that in the
future...
There is a TSB about the problem, and the new torque converters are
reportedly redesigned to address the problem. Hoo-boy sure hope so...
btw, I also read about the coil over replacement of the air bag
suspension, but I think someone also mentioned you can't get rid of the
codes that continually come up for the air suspension at that point!
Much easier to drive it as intended, a nice cushy tuna boat for
freeways, or ski areas and mtb backroads where the extra clearance is
nice, and take the S6 on the all newly paved Polk County twisties!

Is the torque converter something specific only to the Allroad Tips or
all models? If so, is there a year break on them? What are the
symptoms of the problem? Wife's '01 A6 has a Tip - man I hate that
tranny!

Taka,
This is just one more personal data point, but my wifes '01 Allroad has
had two front airbags replaced, and one of the level control sensors
since our ownership began about 70K ago (bought used with 21K in '04)
related to your question about suspension problems. Those airbags are
way expensive, and r&r is another huge chunk o' change... The
compressor has been fine to this point, but we have been quick to repair
the airbags before causing too much duty on the compressor from the
leaks.
But by far the worst we've had with the car was the dreaded code for
torque converter a couple months ago. Car was still working, but the
Vag-com code suggested we had serious trouble ahead. I authorized the
shop to replace the torque converter before the entire tranny was ruined
by the impending implosion. 14 hours of labor later they were road
testing it and the oil pump behind the torque converter gave up the
ghost.... car no go at that point.
By the time it was all done, we had a bill for 21 hours labor (he gave
us a break on the second R&R of the tranny), and over $2K in parts. The
car is such a cushy cruiser we don't really want to give it up,
especially now that we have close to 50% of the value wrapped up in
recent repairs. Driving my S6A is way more satisfying for Oregon back
roads though - that air suspension on the Allroad pretty much removes
the fun factor from the handling department.

What's the word on the reliability of the suspension on allroads?
I've heard horror stories about the air suspension crapping out.
