Taka,

One car that was not mentionned, great sport car, can be found under 35K$,
and you can survive a 1000 miles trip in it: Lotus Esprit SE, S4 or
S4S.Personnaly, I would go for a S4S because it's really track oriented,
although much rarer than a SE or a S4. Or a 300 Sport, but that may be over
budget. You can also try a V8TT, sometime one goes for less than the 35K$
budget, I've even seen a 350 Sport going for a bit below 40K$. Now, _that_
was a steal.

It meets the criteria, I think:
- Practically: None, except if you play golf, a golf bag is all it can
carry.
- Winter performance: Not _that_ bad I would say, a mid-engine RWD on snow
is kind of fun, except that a Lotus Esprit rust faster than you can spell
R-U-S-T.
- Power, handling, breaks, feel: That's what lotus is all about, except that
power is interpreted in power/weight ratio. The S4S at 340HP is not that
much for a supercar, but HP/lb is another story.

Side advantages, you won't find another one at every corner, and they're one
of the most beautiful sport coupe ever made (personal taste or course).

You need to know where to find parts, and they're not exactly cheap, but
probably not worse than P-parts.

BTW, I don't know how the S2000 have been mentionned with the 1000 miles
roundtrip criteria. Personnaly, I love it for pure fun on short distance,
but I've made Montreal-Quebec in one, and it took me 24h to get normal
hearing back. This shit is the noisest stock car I've ever been in, and not
exactly a pleasant sound.

Vincent.

Listers-
I'm looking at getting a new car and would love some input.

I'm looking only at 2-seat sports cars (or 2+2 coupes).

Budget is under $35k tops.

Porsche 996
Chevy Corvette C6
NO BMWs
???

Those are my top contenders.

Practicality is not an issue (actually, both cars above are pretty decently
practical).

Bad weather performance is not an issue (that's what snow tires are for and
I wouldn't drive this car in the snow).

Power, handling, brakes, driving feel are my top priorities. Reliability
must be halfway decent (no Ferraris).

I also want something that I can take a 1000 mile road trip and not be a
hairshirt experience (like a Caterham 7).

My concern with the above-

Corvette is a GM- typical GM parts bin crap abounds, possibility of lots of
stupid little things failing here and there.

Porsche is a Porsche- high parts prices, high maintenance prices, high
insurance rates, much higher mileage for comparably priced cars.

Audi TT- no way. Audi S4- not a sports car. Audi RS4- yes, but too heavy,
too expensive. Audi R8- way out of budget.

Lotus Elise- concerns with subframe delamination and failure, very hard
ingress/egress, not that much power.

Factory Five Roadster, turnkey- definitely nice, but a little too hard to
live with.

Taka
