[s-cars] S-CAR-List Digest, Vol 62, Issue 5

Chris, I just went with my stock 16" Avus wheels as a dedicated snow set  five days ago. I've heard and read all the virtues of every tire over the Blizzak but when I saw Tirerack's sale on the 215/55/16 REVO 1 Blizzak, I knew nothing would ever come close to their closeout price of $62 per tire.......seriously, I know a ton of people on this forum have a lot more money than me, bless them, but these Blizzaks are a dream no matter what I encounter around the metro Milwaukee area.....I considered price and a compliant ride on dry roads for my choice. I also had the option of using an old set of 15" steelies that I ran on my 1985 190E 2.3-16V through three winters with Blizzaks, so I know the Blizzak met my needs. Are you seriously going to do search and rescue in 14" of powder or are you going to compete in a skidpad competition? The quattro system is so good that I made it through 6000 miles of Wisconsins worst winter in a century last year on my
stock Avus with a set of Dunlop SP6000 with 30K miles on them. I had to drive carefully but the quattro system is that good. If you have the money to purchase the incredibly expensive varieties we have available then I'm sure you won't be disappointed but I'm in doubt that the margin of improvement over my pedestrian Blizzaks is apparent to my generally uneducated Irish arse. If the Blizzak is truly the worst tire choice out there, I'll keep buying them on price and I'll probably take that corner up ahead about 10% slower than the guy in front of me with those Nokians or Gislaveds. Can't tell you all how much fun it is to finally own my dream car and be able to run it on my budget too.

Gentz,

I find myself with too many options!

I have my old beat up steel 15" wheels I can use for my snows, OR
a set of 16" 5 spoke wheels which are uber nicer in appearance.

Trying to decide whether I should go with 15" or 16" snow tires, any
thoughts?

Regards
Chris
