Just watch out for the speed traps in Michigan.
I did a road trip from LA to Ottawa and there were more cop cars between
Lansing and Flint than the whole 3000 miles I covered.
Have fun.

No. There is nothing out there. . .nothing at all.
LOL. Actually, I did this drive when I purchased my S6 from Vermont and
drove it back to my home in CO.
South Dakota has both Devil's Tower and the Badlands, pretty cool, although
you are traveling at the wrong time of year to go on hikes, camp and
otherwise enjoy them. And the northern route isn't the most direct, because
you'll have to end up going pretty south to hit Denver (if that's your final
destination).
Interstate 80 probably makes the most sense and is definitely more scenic
than I-70 which is really pretty ugly. 80 through eastern Colorado follows
the Platte river, so there are some terrain features, unlike most of eastern
Colo and Kansas. Iowa City (off of 80) is a great place with a nice
downtown, cool restaurants and shops, and would be be a really good place to
spend the night.
But if you do decide to travel via 70, then Laurence, Kansas is also another
great Midwestern university town and would also make a good spot to spend an
evening.
Of course, Colorado will have the best stuff, including scenery but it's not
the Midwest's fault that they are geologically challenged. ;-)
Tom '95 S6 Avant (CO native, but no sticker on my car to tell them thar
newcomers that).
