Bob,
I can't help you on the clutch issue, but I've been soured on Subarus. We purchased a new Outback in '98 and in the following 36 months we:
- Had the engine fail at 1400 miles with the pin for the connecting rod failing and taking out the cylinder head/piston/ and crank. (3 weeks into ownership) Car was out of our hands for 6 weeks.
- New brake master cylinder at 7500 and 30,000 miles.
- Three failed calipers
- Worn window tracks and cranks (never had that happen on any car)
- Every six months the dash lights had to be replaced.
- Door panels had to be replaced twice because of failing adhesive.
- Exhaust
- ECU failed and replaced.
- Stereo failed and replaced
- water pump failed.
We got rid of the car before the warranty was up we were so fed up with it. It didn't qualify for the Lemon law since it was different issues most of the time. Definitely a car built after beer on Friday afternoon. My wife's '99 A6 has proven more reliable!
But, I did notice that the clutch was weak when we first bought it, with some minor slipping. It was described as "normal" by the dealer. When the engine failed (I had to argue with Subaru for a whole new engine, they just wanted to give me a new cylinder head, piston, and machine the crank), I had them replace the clutch and didn't have a problem with it since. The clutch, at least.
