Yeah, I've already chimed in on this off-list.
Labor is labor, if they'll cover the labor and the cost of the OEM clutch,
then just figure in the cost difference of the aftermarket clutch.
My car is out of warranty, so I don't plan on taking it to the dealer ever
again. I'd rather take it to my mechanic who, if something goes wrong, will
make good on it.
I figure a clutch going bad in 16k miles, done over a relatively short
period of time, is one of several things:
1. defective clutch- lining material is bad or there was a problem during
assembly
2. driver error- the car could drive a lot differently from the previous car
and the owner might not have been able to adjust to the clutch pickup point,
etc. and inadvertently wear the clutch prematurely
3. minor oil leak causing oil to get on the clutch disc and cause major
slipping but not enough oil to really have a visible drip
BTW, a friend of mine destroyed his clutch in one shot- was reversing, then
put the car into 1st, dropped the clutch while still moving backwards,
killed the clutch nearly instantly as the clutch was basically asked to
decelerate the car in the opposite direction and then provide drive forward.
