I assumed that he was speaking of the FWD models, as I'd venture a guess
even with the Haldex on the "new" Passats, they wouldn't have been hampered
by snow, even while wearing the ubiquitous No-Season tires they come with.
Stopping and turning would still be an issue, however.
FWIW, my brother was complaining that he couldn't go anywhere in his
slushbox Mazda 6 with 4 year old Michelin Pilot Alpins, his traction control
was kicking in hard, and he had to get a running start to get up the hill to
his parking area at work. I advised him to get new winter tires (4 years is
a bit long in the tooth), to which he ended up with studded Hakka 5s. Now I
get no more complaints, TG. So I'd venture that loaner Passat would've done
fine with an appropriate set of tires.
