Chris-
That has nothing to do with whether you have AWD or not-

4 x 0 = 0.

If the loaner car has the standard crappy all-season tires on it, you're
going to have problems with snow. My Mom's Beetle
was a real handful in snow with the stock Michelin MXV4s.

Having AWD just allows you to feel like you are in much better shape, even
with crappy all-seasons. However, you still won't be able to turn or stop
well in snow compared to real winter tires.

I nearly crashed my STi its first time in fresh snow on my street being a
little overenthusiastic with the throttle and finding out that I couldn't
steer or stop even with my Nokian NRWs (simply too wide for the weight of
the car). That was embarrassing.

Most FWD VWs I've driven are actually pretty good in the snow with properly
sized winter tires. Just my experience.
