[s-cars] I clutched too soon

HAHAHA That was EXACTLY what I was going to say.
Funny aside on a clutch story.
Initial Problem: Poor college kid a number of years ago (me)drag racing well
modified '78 Camaro at drag strip. Can't get the car out of 3rd gear after
the run so drive home at 10:30 at night timing the lights.
Diagnosis: Next day in apartment parking lot (our neighbors LOVED us) take
said Camaro tranny and bellhousing out. As pressure plate is loosened
pieces of clutch disc start falling on my head. Flywheel side of the clutch
is totally shattered, pressure plate side looks perfect.
Resolution: Luckily the cheap college kid had bought this clutch at an
unsuspecting local Autozone with a lifetime warranty. Go back to Autozone
with "faulty" clutch disc and place on the parts counter with the good side
up. OK, making a reference here to the old commercial of "this is your
brain....(throw eggs in the pan)...this is your brain on drugs" If you're
younger than 30 and don't remember this, it's OK. So I say to the parts guy
while looking at the good side of the clutch, "This is your clutch," turn
the clutch over "This is your clutch at the dragstrip...I'll take my
replacement clutch now." There were no clauses with the warranties except
"commercial use."
Anyway, just a funny story. But not nearly as good as the time we had to
call AAA because my friend's car broke the rear diff on the starting line.
It was absolutely a classic seeing the AAA flatbed coming down the staging
lanes :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the pressure plate SUPPOSED to be bare
metal?

No explanation given. "The pressure plate was worn down to bare
metal. I've never seen this happen before" was the explanation.
