Concur on the weight=longevity aspect. Dunno how the exhaust from my
departed 5KCSTQ compares/ed but @19 years with 330K salted winter road miles
it still did not pass gas except from the intended orifice.

Subject: [s-cars] Fw: 95 S6 Heaviest Exhaust System Ever
Brice queried: "Why are these original mufflers so heavy?"
IMHO, the muffler system is/was so heavy to a) help attenuate sound
(the first goal of any muffler system, but also aided by thicker metal)
and b) to last a long long time, i.e. to provide value to the car and piece
of mind to the owner. Remember most of the system is stainless steel.
Seeing as I have never heard of a system failing due to rusting out, even on
very
high mileage vehicles that are now 15 or 16 years old,
Audi's engineers seem to have accomplished both goals.
But that's just my opinion.
Dave (RS2'd and still happy to run the quiet OE exhaust system) F.
