Craig,
Coil failures are, IME, more gradual. They just start to weaken and
progress, eventually, to the "He's dead, Jim" stage. In the early
stages a miss develops at fairly high boost levels. As the coil
continues to weaken the missing happens at lower and lower MAP levels
until, eventually it becomes a full-time miss. At this point it
mimics a failed POS.
The knock sensors signal the ECU to instantly dial back the timing
advance and result is an instant decrease of power. There is nothing
slow about it.
