If you are driving on Oahu just get something that idles smoothly, as that
is what you will be doing most of the time :) Horrible traffic, especially
if you are talking in proximity to Waikiki or beachfront Honolulu. This
would actually be one of the only places I can think of where you could buy
a musclecar with 4.10 gears and not be worried in the least about topping
out at 100mph.
On the Big Island, although it has less traffic, everybody is on what I call
"Hawaii Time." How could it possibly take 25 minutes to go 17 miles in the
middle of a Lava Desert, you might ask. Ahh, well you didn't think about
the four guys in front of you on the two lane road all going 45 mph because
where have they got to go anyway? :)
I can't believe I am going to say this, but if I lived on Oahu I would
probably drive *gulp* an automatic.

Land Rovers are wonderful vehicles...if you get a good one. I had a
'95 County LWB for 60K miles...when I sold it at 100K parts were
falling off left and right.
My '99 was far better, but it was much newer, with fewer miles. Doh.
The Defender 90 is designed to begin decomposing as it leaves the
factory line. It's really quite an agricultural vehicle, with one
purpose...climbing over rocks and playing in mud. The 110 is more
civilized in that the wheelbase is longer. And that's it.
I would own one as a 7th or 8th car, not less. Again, wonderful
vehicles, but *only* for play...and you'll need help maintaining
them...pretty much everything is too big/heavy for one person to manage.
There is a large internet support group...you'll need it. :)
Just my .02
