Hey guys

A friend of mine has a Subi that is out of warranty in terms of miles but still very much IN warranty in terms of time  Subie does a 3yrs/36k warranty and the car is only 1.5 yrs old.  The spedo has failed and the stealer wants $1200 to R&R the tranny (plus $75 parts) so they can replace the "wheel" that counts pulses for the spedo head

Is there any way to get the dealer to fork-over some "Goodwill" warranty work?  Any techniques anyone has used to get a response other than NO in this type of situation? 

Sorry for the WOB - but if anyone has ideas I'd love to hear 'em
