Gentlemen,
Since I have a business associate who is very knowledgeable in this area I
sent him the article previously cited. FWIW, his return comments to me follow:
"Mark:
Mr. Cringley's concerns are completely correct, except for his parting
statement that we didn't know what would happen when we began the switch to
non-lead solders. We did know, but nobody listened, or cared -- all the regulators
jumped on the European "Jane Fonda" "green" bandwagon.
The rebuttal at the end re the Tin-Silver-Copper alloys is all wet on two
accounts. First, the tin does NOT stop whisker formation -- it is the main
culprit (copper is the element that seems to do a little suppression of whisker
growth). Second, all the various Tin-Silver-Copper alloys still form
whiskers and are VERY significantly worse than Tin-Lead solders with respect to
whisker growth.
Crazy world."
