[s-cars] Intro and stalling thread...

I use VAG-COM and Bentley quite happily in a Parallels Virtual Machine
(VM) running Windows XP on my Intel-based MacBook Pro.

If your Mac is Intel-based, I encourage you to check out either
Parallels http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/ or VMWare http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
for virtualizing Windows. They are each very good, with little to
distinguish them, until one really reaches the arcane corners of their
capability brag sheets. I happen to use Parallels, and have colleagues
using VMWare, and we find very little real difference. Sure, the
evangelists for either product will proclaim theirs best, but that's
really just fanboy bravado; either will do a great job.

If your Mac is an older PowerPC-based model, you might consider
upgrading, as the performance of the newer Macs is astonishing when
compared to older PPC-based models. If upgrading is unlikely, you will
either have to find an el-cheapo Windows box, or use a Windows
emulator on your Mac. I have not run an emulator, but have heard
groans and grumblings when they are discussed. Of course, eBay is a
fair source for el-cheapo WinTel boxes, but caveat emptor.

To run VAG-COM in a Windows XP VM on my Mac required an upgrade to a
USB connected dongle http://ross-tech.com/vag-com/hex-usb+can.html,
after that it's all peaches and cream.

HTH.
