Leaving the rear defroster "on" isn't a good idea for a number of reasons.
It takes a decent amount of amperage- amperage necessary to "as quickly as
possible" recharge your battery after starting.  The wiring and switch
itself might get hot and fail if on for extended periods of time, and the
most important reason is that the heater element will burn out.  Multiply
that by 3 if you have heater mirrors.  Many cars have a 5 or 10 min timer on
these circuits for this very reason.

Take the switch out and clean it would be my advice... or replace it.
