The only apparent possible way to start the switch replacement
procedure was to simply grip and pull the knob from the dial
switch. Not with this 70 yo hand. It finally yielded to the
persuasion of a West Virginia Pipe Wrench (AKA channel locks or
slip-joint pliers) and simple brute force. There is a rather stiff
spring clip up inside the knob which holds onto the shaft quite
tightly. Once the knob is off then further removal is obvious.
