Michael: the first thing to try is cleaning the connectors/plugs on the back
head control unit. My control unit started being really flaky, and would
"lock" onto one temp and fan speed. I removed the unit (carefully pry up the
wood trim around the unit with a small screwdriver, it will "pop" off, thus
giving you access to two screws on each side of the unit. Remove them, and
the unit slides out easily.)
Clean all the plugs on the back of the unit, then re-connect. If you are
lucky, the unit will now work normally. You may want to refrain from
replacing the wood trim until you ascertain that the cleaning process has or
has not worked. If not, then finding a used unit that with a known history
(ie, it works correctly) should be the next step. Look for one from someone
who is parting out a car, as that will be the cheapest solution.
Oh, my car was a 95.0 avant. Not sure if the 95.5 are substantially
different. If so, my advice to you (like my advice to so many others) is
totally useless.
The knowledge base on audifans has a good description of how to
access/remove the control unit, too. Check that out prior to getting out
your tools.
