In high heat, I have had the gas tank vent to atmosphere, which makes a
humming sound. This is the alcohol in the gas vaporizing due to the high
temperature of the fuel. Just an idea, but I will bet that was your
problem. Pulling the battery cable will have no effect on the sound.
