is a hybrid really more environmentally friendly?  it may use less gasoline in city driving, but what about the environmental impact of its battery pack?

personally, i am hoping for an eco-friendly sports sedan or sports car soon.  it doesn't have to be particularly fast, but it needs to handle well and be fun to drive.  i realize that there are power and weight constraints with most eco-friendly alternatives, but i'd like a car that's not so aggressively boring as a prius, camry, etc.

Hopefully this will be the last nail in this particular coffin.

I knew when I posted this request that I would come under fire for
intimating that I would consider something as "ugly," "new-age,"
"slow," "scammish," or "foreign" as a Prius.  I was not disappointed,
or surprised, or hurt.  But I do want to say why I would expose myself
to this (since it is now the "weekend" for many of us and therefore
"light" topic fodder time.

My reason for considering a Prius, or any other high-mileage vehicle
is that we - all of us on this mudball - are facing a dwindling
resource.  I believe that I need to make a choice about that.  I tell
my children about conservation, but as any parent knows, kids don't
listen as much as they watch.  I need to change my personal use of
petroleum.

I am not giving up on the S6.  In fact, I am building a special,
high-ceilinged garage as part of the house remodel up in Duluth where
I hope to install a lift so I can work on the underside of Miss Piggey
in a safe manner.

But in terms of daily driving, I need something that uses less.

Some of you looked at this as a cost/benefit equation, which as a
project engineer, I fully support.  But that doesn't cover all of the
bases in this kind of decision.  I mostly want to use less gas than I
would with the Avant.  It's a great car and I love it, but if I can
double my gas mileage I want to do that.

I'm going to look at this used Prius and make a decision.  If I decide
not to bite, or if the owner decides not to accept my offer, I will
happily look at TDI offerings in the fall.
