[s-cars] Snow tire shopping, blizzak vs Nokian vs? thoughts?

Ah, I see.  However, I still maintain that the X-Ice series is decent in loose snow (although not as good as the best).  Look at the tread patten... the Alpins had nothing but simply grooves along the circumference (and the sipes you mentioned), the X-Ice has some tread blocks and "zag"s to them.  Check out the TireRack review on them.  The Xi2's are compared to the Blizzak WS-60, Goodyears, and even the Hakka RSi's (since it was a Michelin event).

Actually, I thought the entire Alpin line was mostly designed for ice and hardpack conditions, which bears out in my experience with them. They were the first with the Michelin's patented "Y" sipe, which was done to keep the sipe to tread ration constant as the tires wore. As I said, they were pretty exceptional on freezing rain (the really scary stuff) and pretty damned good on hard pack. They were just simply terrible in loose stuff.
