Unless there are some broken strands or corrosion on the wires, I
don't see much to gain by replacing the wire since you will still
have two splices on
each wire to tape up and/or shrink wrap.
It sounds like new boots are needed. It doesn't do any good to
ensure you have 40K volts out of the coil if you have to push it
through a bad boot or
spark plug. I believe you are thinking correctly. There are lots of
used coils available to keep you going cheaply until you determine
the optimal
system for you.
