BTDT WRT tailgate rust.  Somehow, someway (and after whay too much follow up
and persistence with three levels of audigodz) I was able to get Audi to
step up and honor their 10 yr perforation warranty and replace the tailgate
(thank you Chgo. winter road salt.)  There was a lot of back and forth about
what exactly is a perforation.  Added to that was that I was literally just
28 days short of 10 years.  

Long story short, IIRC, I bought the tailgate and they paid for the install
and painting etc.   I don't think a new tailgate was "that" expensive..
Maybe $500 or so??  Don't remember.   

All and all, a sad "tail."  Thanks for reminding me;)

If you can find a sunbelt avant tailgate (good luck) get that and have Mike
Platt Paint Shop (MPPS)tm paint it for you.  Otherwise, new might now be as
bad $$ as you think.  That said, if the shop doesn't know how to disassemble
the inside panel. after they get it off don't expect any plastic tabs,
slots, connectors, fasteners to still be there for reassembly.
