Peter,

My avant spent one year in CT, and the remainder in NV and CA. It had
rust all around the license lights and the hatch handle. Treating and
painting required removing the taillights and the interior panels. I
can see
that several years of NE salted crud would have created real damage.

The tailgate trim is made much like the a pillar trim with the
plastic center
strips sticking into retainer clips. Heed Maloney's advice and
carefully
remove the trim and cover yourself. The access for the backup light
bulbs on each end of the interior cover allow access to screws
holding it
in place. You can hope the other clips allow the cover to be removed in
one piece. Mine was pretty broken up when I got the avant, so I did
some
extensive epoxy repairs.

The chance to lube and adjust the rear lock mechanism worked wonders
for making it operate with ease.

The A6 hatch fits as well, so there is hope to find one rust-free.
