[s-cars] Couple things.....Outer Front CV Boot, Brake parts, brake tools

You don't need to separate the lower control arm to do this job. Remove the
axle bolt, remove the inner CV joint at the tranny axle flange, crank the
steering to full lock, and you can lift the inner end of the axle up and to
the rear and slide the axle out of the hub. You have to jockey the axle a
bit to find the "sweet spot" but it will come out; just did this on my S6 to
replace a front wheel bearing - it's a lot easier than struggling with that
ball joint to get it out and back in.

If you do choose to drop the control arm, always use a new pinch bolt and
never, never, NEVER use a tool to pry open the slot in the hub carrier. Once
pried open, the carrier is ruined and will not reliably hold the ball joint.
Some listers have had the ball joint pop out while in motion - it ruins your
entire day.

The axle bolt is torque-to-yield; it should be replaced as well.

Outer CV boots are pretty easy. Little messy though. Just need to separate
the pinch bolt on the lower control arm, remove the axle bolt and pull the
axle out of the hub. You'll need a really big pry bar (I use a long 2X4) to
get the lower control arm low enough to get the strut loose.

Then depending on the year of your car you should be able to just run the
axle bolt back in to the axle to remove the joint. All the Audis I've done
have come off that way.

Then just install the boot and re-assemble. Boots are usually fairly cheap
compared to a new joint and not much more work to install. Just ake sure the
clips are nice and tight when you get done.

Hey guys,

While surveying my brake needs, I noticed my left front CV boot is split
and leaking grease.....I noticed Blau has a $99 refurb kit for the outer cv
joint. Anyone just do the boot while it is still on the car? Or do I need
to
take the whole axle off to R&R the cv boot? Not hearing any clicking or
anything, so I think the joint is still fine. BTDT appreciated.....or other
suggestions.
