the lines, you'd just have to push the pedal a bit further to compress  
the air. If this is the case, you'd have a built-in spring keeping the  
pads against the rotors, as you describe.

A better read would be the fluid coming out of the bleeder screws  
during bleeding. Was it COMPLETELY free of bubbles before you  
tightened down the bleeder screw?
