It is with a sad heart and a lump in my throat that I share that Rascal passed away today.
This is the third of our furry friends to have died in the last few years....and it really sucks!

Rascal came to join our family in a most unusual way, my wife (girlfriend then) rescued a dog off of the busiest road in our area. It was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, in our attempt to help the dog find its owners we decided taking it to the local animal conrol would be the best option as surely it's owners would look there first.
Gladly the owners did and it was home that night, however we would not know this until the following Monday. We both visited the animal control without the other knowing, and then described this white furry mass of a dog we each saw while visiting.
I returned on Tuesday to visit this dog, learning it was a Samoyed, and as he looked at me with these two big dark eyes I inquired about when he could be adopted....tomorrow I was told.
Oh ok, we'll have to talk about this...no, if he isn't adopted by tomorrow he'll be put down.
This lovable pile of fur just looked deeply into my eyes and stirred my soul....it was done he was ours.
The first week was not a fun adventure, Rascal (a name he would continually earn) had kennel cough and
had to be kept seperate from Samson (siberian husky) and Lotus the cat.
When they finally got together it didn't take Rascal and Samson long to bond and become brothers....it was
a little bit harder for Lotus the cat! But this too would also pass.
We had many great adventures together, Rascal jerking my wife out of her boots into the snow, chasing
squirrels and getting a racoon cornered in a tree in our back yard bellowing at it at 3 am until someone
called the police.
Years later Samson would lose his battle with cancer...then soon after Aria was born Lotus would leave us....Rascal seemed to understand and stepped in providing us with the support and love we needed.
These last couple weeks his reduced mobility was amplified and his reduced control of his bladder got worse. Today he enjoyed his favorite snack of soft serve vanilla ice cream and a good back rub just before the rest of us went for a walk.
Unfortunatley after returning home from our evening walk I discovered that Rascal had died.
Now I get to figure out how to explain to a 3 year old girl why her dog isn't here anymore.
Our son's due date is Sept 22, I can only think that somehow Rasacal knew that he had done his job and it was time to rest. That he must leave now so that we can grieve before our son
is born.
Rascal was the most selfless dog I ever met....all he asked for was love and food.
And he gave soo much more back in return.
Writing this is my way of grieving,,,,I'm not sure yet if I'll press send.
