$2-4k sounds like a lot of money for some gaskets and valves. Figure $1k.
When the belt breaks, the cam stops, and whatever valves are open take
a beating, but when the belt jumps, the cam continues turning with the
crank, just a little late. A little late means that the exhaust
valves are still open when the piston gets to the top of the exhaust
stroke.
