Betsey,
I think cracked/damaged coil wires would allow the spark to arc to ground
effectively causing a "miss" on that cylinder. When the coil is replace the
damaged wire is replaced.
If you inspect the coil wires under the cover and at the back of the cover
you may find cracks from heat. Some listers have solved this problem by
replacing the wires to the coils or wrapping the existing wire with tape or
heat shrink tubing to cover the cracks and stop the arcing.
