[s-cars] Radiator fan not blowing

Hi Bill;

I made a spanner tool when I had to replace the fan clutch on my '94, but
any pin wrench with 5 mm pins should work. As Peter mentioned in his post,
you could use a strap wrench if you take the fan blade off the clutch.

The electric fan should do most of the cooling; I think the belt-driven fan
is there as a back-up for hot days. I've never heard the main fan run on my
car; the electric fan provides enough cooling. If your electric fan isn't
running, you'll want to get that fixed as well.

Good luck! Fest on, bro!

Fred

Thanks Fred,
I found info on SJM
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/cooling.html
bottom of page.
(gotta send Scott a buck or two for sure:)
32 mm is correct but I wonder where to find such a tool and the spanner
tool?
Maybe there are work arounds but always a million times easier with the
correct ones.
Now to call the stealer in the AM to see about a clutch... if that turns out
to be the issue.
Dunno though I see Sachs makes one that maybe FLAPS has and maybe even goofy
tools for rent?
I "think" it's the clutch for some reason but will check out fuses relays
first as best I can.
Thanks for the input!
Of course I only have a million other things to do at the moment.

With the AC on, the electric fan should run at low speed. If it doesn't,
check the relay and the fan connector down by the intercooler - these are
known to fry with the current the fan pulls. The fan may also have am 80 amp
fusible link in the ground wire - can't recall for sure. If all that is OK,
the resistor pack or the motor may be toast.

The belt-driven main fan just idles until the air coming through the rad
gets hot enough to engage the viscous clutch. If the engine is overheating
and the clutch is not engaged it is likely shot. Changing the clutch is
fairly easy but you'll need a 5 mm pinwrench to hold the pulley and I think
it's a 32 mm open-end wrench to remove the clutch.

Folk's,
So, while taking kidz to famous daves bbq, stuck in traffic, suddenly we
start over heating.
Pull over, let it cool a bit and drive a couple minutes to the restaurant...
no issues.
Eat and let car cool for an hour or so, while I surmise it's something with
the fan since its Aokay when we are moving.
So, we make it home, no issues but I do try to keep moving and leave AC on
thinking that fan will turn.
The main fan however just seems listless and I can stop it with my hand
wearing mechanic glove.
So, might this be the fan motor, fan clutch, fuse (will check) and more
importantly is this a DIY and would the parts be available, like, tomorrow?
IOW, could this be completed for sfest departure Thursday afternoon or... do
I upscond the wifes D2?
Bill~hot n bothered~M
