George,

The line should be one piece with steel hard lines on either end and flexible line in the middle.

It sounded to me like you described removing the flexible line and discovering rubber hose not 
meant for hydraulic fluids. If this is the case than I think someone patched/cobbled/pretended 
to repair your hose.

Your options are to order a replacement OR follow Vittorio's lead and have a reputable shop
use the right line and repair yours.
