Jim,
Don't leap to throwing coils at it until you've completed maintenance, you need to make sure
there is a good path from the coils to the spark plugs.
When I bought a set of the spark plug connectors they cost $5 each, so $25-$35 is what I
would expect them to cost.
Recently helped a local S6 avant owner with a terrible miss.
Step 1. Replaced the old POS copper plugs that the previous owner had installed an unknown amount of miles.
Doing this improved the drivability greatly,
Step 2. Swapped out his old spark plug connectors with a good used set I had lying around, after this the car ran perfectly.
