Exactly. They stretch, and on top of that the guides are made of plastic and 
can become brittle and discolored with age. If one $2 guide goes, it's 
typically the same as if the chain lets go.

I deal with the W126 a lot, and most need it done, unless low mileage and 
highly maintained (lots of regular oil changes seems to keep the guides 
looking better).
