[s-cars] Exhausts

Yep... managing the noise to a friendly level is certainly a trick. My exhaust is 3.5 inches from the turbo outlet to the back bumper. I started with a single muffler... ha! I added a second... still too much. I finally added a resonator right off of the DP, and that brought things to a fairly reasonable level.

I can say one thing for the Stromung... it makes a very nice sound that is easy to live with. They nailed that.

The stock system is a little more than 2 1/4". Still, the xsectional area
difference is significant. Which is why I went with two new 2 1/2" hi perf
cats and a SS Magnaflow dual 2 1/2" in/out for the center unit. My rear
unit is still an Abt piece that will need replacing. It did little to the
stock exhaust but make it noisier. Now, the result is a bit too noisy, but
no resonance problems. I plan to replace it with something, sometime. I
imagine it will be a Dynomax Ultraflo SS unit, if I can figure out how to
make it work. I think the Ultraflo's have a smoother sound than the
Magnoflow's.

Compared to the almost stock exhaust, this setup breathes noticeable better
throughout the range. It definitely does not strangle at high rpm's, as the
Don found the early Stromung's did. The only issue is the cats. Which are a
less than good fit, casing-wise, due to the bracket up there. One had to
be rotated to make them fit. If I lay into it, contact will sometimes be
made.

Steve

The OE system is not 2.5" per tube, IIRC.

Also, with a single vs. dual setup, you also have to take into account
losses from wall friction or whatever it's called.

That said, I don't think the Stromung flows any better than the OE system-
you need to go to a 3.5" setup to really see big gains, but you will at the
expense of a lot more sound.
